Call for Nominations – 2006

Awards:
* TYCA-West Annual Teaching Award
* TYCA-West Annual Part-Time Teaching Award
* TYCA-West Annual Writing Award

TYCA-West would like to recognize two-year college instructors in our region who exemplify innovation and creativity in the profession.

Eligibility: Two-year college full or part-time instructors in English, composition, literature, technical writing, and closely related disciplines. Nominees should currently teach at a two-year college in Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, or Southern Idaho. Nominations by colleagues are preferred, but self-nominations are acceptable.

Award: Each winner will receive a $50 award and recognition at the 2006 TYCA-West Conference in Park City, Utah, October 20-21, 2006.

Requirements for Each Award:
* A cover letter listing the nominee’s school affiliation, status, and teaching experience
* Narrative describing the reasons for the nomination
* Supporting manuscripts (For teaching awards: syllabi, assignments, student writing, etc. For writing award: articles, essays, fiction, poetry, drama, etc.)
* Nomination deadline: August 31, 2006

Deadline Extended for Presentation Proposals

We have extended our deadline for presentation proposals until August 31, 2006. Please consider joining us this year on October 20-21 in Park City, Utah. The original call for proposals is shown below. If you have any questions, please contact Jason Pickavance at jason.pickavance@slcc.edu or Beth Myers at elizabeth.myers@ttu.edu.

This year's conference will be at Prospector Square in beautiful Park City, Utah. We welcome submissions that focus on the theory and practice of teaching writing, especially in relation to teaching English at the two-year college. We're particularly interested in presentations that address the changing conditions of literacy in the 21st century, changes in the nature of the classroom, applications of technology to expand learning possibilities, and challenges/successes particular to Western rural and urban educational environments. We're also encouraging graduate students who are interested in community college teaching to present at this year's conference and become involved in TYCA-West.

Proposals should include:
* Name, institution, and full address (including e-mail) of presenter/presenters.
* Title/type of presentation -- single, panel, workshop (sessions are usually 50 minutes).
* One-page abstract, including relevance to conference theme and summary of main points.

Executive Board responsibilities

I was just reading over Sue's post from last year and I would reiterate the need to clarify job responsibilities. I'm supposed to be (I believe) the assitant chair for the TYCA-West Conference this year but I really do not know what that entails. Any help in clarifying responsibilities would be great.

Are there WPAs at two-year institutions?
What does Writing Program Administration “look like” at two-year colleges?
How is being a WPA at a two-year institution similar and/or different from four-year institutions?
What has been published about WPAs at two-year intuitions?
How can we better connect and support two-year college WPAs?

Come join our conversation about Writing Program Administrators at Two-Year Colleges. This conversation will be a part of this year’s WPA conference, Keeping on Track: Looking Back, Looking Forward, Looking Out for New Opportunities, in Chattanooga TN. To engage in dialogue about WPAs @ Two-Year Colleges our panel proposed both an online asynchronous portion as well as a synchronous portion (both face-to-face and online). If you are interested in discussion questions like those above, please join us.

Searching for a Theme

I need a theme for next year's conference in Park City. I recall that mining metaphors were popular. Here's my first stab at a theme:

Mining New Literacies

Does anyone have suggestions? My goal is to have the flyer done by next week and send it to Elizabeth so it can be put on the TYCA-West web site.

I also want to increase graduate student participation in the conference. I plan on contacting the graduate schools at the University of Utah, Utah State, BYU, and Idaho State University. I want any graduate students who self identify as future community college professors to participate in the conference.

Hangover

O.K. I'm in. My post-conference hangover has diminished my ability to reflect on what we want to replicate and what we want to omit in future conferences; nevertheless, one change I would like to suggest is that we be more specific about who does what. When (if?) I find my energy, I'll try to type up short "job descriptions" (subject to the board's approval of course) so that people who agree to accept a responsibilty actually know what they're getting into. (I wonder when it's going to dawn on Jason that he's doing almost everything for the conference next year?)

I finally have our blog set up, and I believe all is working. If you notice any problems though, or have any suggestions, please don't ever hesitate to contact me.

Since I don't have contact information for all members yet, I've only been able to invite those who are on the REC board and a few others who I just happen to have email addresses for. I should be receiving the membership forms from Jason in the next couple of weeks, and once that happens, I will invite everyone else. In the meantime though, if you are or you know a TYCA-West member who hasn't been invited yet, please send me that person's email address and they will be invited ASAP. Also, if you have any suggestions for additional links or if you have a blog that we can add to the list on the right-hand side of this page, please let me know and I will get that posted as well. I'm still trying to learn how to use this blog myself, but if you need assistance with anything, I'd be happy to try to help as best I can. And if I can't help, we might have to send in our resident blogging experts.
