Searching for a Theme
I need a theme for next year's conference in Park City. I recall that mining metaphors were popular. Here's my first stab at a theme:
Mining New Literacies
Does anyone have suggestions? My goal is to have the flyer done by next week and send it to Elizabeth so it can be put on the TYCA-West web site.
I also want to increase graduate student participation in the conference. I plan on contacting the graduate schools at the University of Utah, Utah State, BYU, and Idaho State University. I want any graduate students who self identify as future community college professors to participate in the conference.

I think it's a great idea to increase the graduate student attendance at our conference (I was half listening to your conversation regarding this, half reading in the shuttle on the way to the airport and so I have been thinking about this also for a while). I think we should definitely try to recruit grad. students at the colleges you just mentioned. Do we want to try to recruit them from elsewhere too? What I'm thinking about is the comment you made in the shuttle that this is a great way to meet future colleagues/employers. Students from outside the "west" region might also eventually migrate to the area, and so they might also have an interest in this. Should we try to recruit them now, or not?
I've also been thinking about what I can do as membership chair to increase our membership. I was thinking about starting by contacting all of the community/junior colleges that fall within our region -- ask them to spread the word, send them the flyer, give them the URL for the webpage, and maybe even email individual faculty members at these institutions. I'd start with email and then maybe move to mail once we have the newsletter, etc. out. What do you all think?
These are all great ideas, and I'm glad someone else thinks that it's a good idea to attract more graduate students.
I definitely plan on contacting individuals I know at a few two-year colleges--specifically The College of Southern Idaho. I also know people who teach at satellite campuses for UVSC who might be interested in the conference.
First, of course, I actually need to make the flyer and come up with a darn theme.
I also want to see more grad students. Last year, all I did was send our flyer to the chairs of the English departments in Utah and asked them to post it. I like Beth's idea much better. Many grad students don't realize that we want them to present; maybe a personal invitation would help. As to Mining New Literacies--no colons? no parentheses? no slashes? what's wrong with you?
